George Metcalfe

Overview

George is a member of the firm's Private Wealth Services Group in the Coral Gables office, where he maintains a sophisticated practice that services high net worth individuals, multigenerational families, and established dynasties of wealth across the globe. His clients include domestic and international business owners, institutional investors, hedge fund managers, corporate executives, professional athletes, recording artists, entertainers, and some of the wealthiest families in the world, who rely on George as a trusted strategic advisor at the intersection of tax, estate planning, asset protection, fiduciary matters, and cross-border wealth planning.

George's practice is defined by the breadth of his capabilities. At its core, he architects and executes advanced wealth transfer and tax reduction strategies tailored to the unique complexities of generational wealth. His experience across the full spectrum of planning disciplines—including income and transfer tax planning, business succession, expatriation, pre-immigration planning, foreign investment in the United States, Florida law, and charitable planning—sets him apart as a versatile practitioner who seamlessly integrates multiple areas of the law into a unified planning approach. The combination of his versatility and fluency in these areas make him a valued advisor for families with global interests, multijurisdictional assets, and complex ownership structures.

A hallmark of George's practice is his embedded role advising trust companies and family offices. He works hand-in-hand with family office teams, trust companies, financial institutions, accountants, and legal counsel in other jurisdictions to deliver a coordinated, team-oriented approach that ensures every facet of a family's wealth is strategically managed and protected across jurisdictions, borders and generations.

George also brings particular depth in fiduciary representation and administration. He regularly advises fiduciaries in estate, trust, and guardianship matters and has a particular expertise in high-value cross-border administrations. George also represents beneficiaries in disputes, litigation and other contested matters--combining planning acumen, fiduciary experience, and litigation capability to guide clients through high-stakes, complex and turbulent matters with care and precision.

George has authored articles, presented at national and regional speaking engagements, and provided expert commentary on a wide range of topics, including cross-border probate and guardianship issues, community property disposition laws, foreign investment in the United States, life insurance techniques for business succession, estate planning in anticipation of divorce, planning with partnerships and S-corporations, and complex trust administration and fiduciary liability issues.

George is a participant in the Probate, Real Property and Trust Law (RPPTL) Section of the Florida Bar, where he contributes to the committees for Trust Law, Asset Protection, Probate Law and Procedure, Guardianship, Power of Attorney and Advance Directives, and Estate and Trust Tax Planning. He has been appointed and served on subcommittees addressing complex Florida probate topics, including a rule change regarding cross-state community property in intestate estates under Florida's Uniform Disposition of Community Property Rights at Death Act.

George is the son of a Cuban immigrant and speaks Spanish. He is actively involved in the community and a participant in Dade Legal Aid's Put Something Back Pro Bono program, where he has dedicated substantial time over the years to assisting low-income families in probate and guardianship administration cases. George is also actively involved with his alma mater, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, and has served on the board of directors of the Belen Alumni Lawyers Section.
